Read the Printed Word!

This story was made out of a project we had to make in 12th grade for English class. But, I liked it so much the outcome I wanted to share it with everyone. It’s 4 pages long but it’s worth a read. :)

Sambi was thinking about how it will be to live in a new country. New food, new culture, new music and everything else you could imagine.  He didn’t sleep the night before just thinking about it. His parents were business people of a very important company and a transfer to a different country meant new opportunities and more money income. At first, all of this overwhelmed Sambi as he was so used to his normal life here in the States but a few days of research ended up in joy of making new discoveries. The destiny was Spain, located on the other side of the globe and the place where their lives would change forever.

Arriving at his new home he already felt a bit anxious, not knowing what was in store for him that faithful day. While unpacking his stuff he saw something shine from the corner of his eye and him being the curious one, he decided to take a look. To his surprise, it was a gold key covered in some dust.  ‘What is this doing here?’ he thought to himself as he blew some of the dust off.  It didn’t look like an ordinary key though; it looked more like it belonged to an antique shop. He was a bit afraid of showing it to his parents hence the fact that they always think he wants to get into trouble and be mischievous but the truth is that this key will get him into more than just trouble.

I don’t know if it was a coincidence or just pure luck, but that key opened more than just a door. It opened every single door of his neighborhood, school and heck, every door of the whole city! That includes more than just doors; cars and any object that had a lock could be opened with that key as well.  Sambi was freaked out a bit but, being the curious one, he decided to explore a bit with it, especially in his new neighborhood. Opening locks was kind of exiting for him as he felt he could discover new things by just a twist of the key. Every day after school he went to explore a new house while the owners were at work. Being such a small and thin boy helped him to easily get through the cracks and corners of every house while carefully watching that no one ever sees him get in and out of it. It was fun yet a bit nerve racking as he never knew what was to come when he went into a new house.

Perfume bottles, jewelry cases and treasure chests were his favorite places to lurk. By looking at all three of them he could find out how the person’s personality was without even knowing them firsthand. He tried his best not to get caught and when he finished lurking he tried his best to put everything into the same place they were but he knew some people already suspected. Mrs. Bumbleton, was one of them. The smell of plums and cheap gold jewelry was enough to know Mrs. Bumbleton was a wanna-be rich woman. Also, she was a perfectionist and he knew this because every time he broke into her house, it was the same way as he left it before, probably with another video camera to record the perpetrator. The thing is, nobody ever knew who was sneaking into their stuff. A burglar would be noticeable because they would have to get in through a series of steps but Sambi only had to open the door to get inside.

One day after school he went in a house he never noticed before. It was colored a pale blue with white bricks and was 2 stories high. Since he saw no cars in the parking lot he let himself him carefully inspecting that no one saw him come in. The house smelled nice and clean. White tiles, white couches, white kitchen, white everything! The whole house was white with the exception of a few random colors. ‘These people must be clean freaks’ he thought to himself. As he went upstairs he could only see more white rooms, white walls, and white doors. There were a lot of rooms In the house but one in specific caught his attention. It was the only room with a bit of pale pink and gray on the curtains and more pale colors covered the furniture and bed sheets. He knew this was the room of a girl, maybe the same age as him and he got very curious as to how she looked.

“So you’re the one who’s been lurking in all the neighborhood houses”- said a sweet voice of a child which quickly startled Sambi. “Wh-who’s there?!” - he said while turning around but no one was behind him. “Right here, silly” - turning around once more he finally saw her. Tanned skin, jet black hair and matching eyes and only merely sizing up to his shoulders, Sambi saw the owner of the room. “I’m Angie, nice to meet you” said Angie giving him a quick hug. “Um…hi, I’m Sambi. Er…nice to meet you too?” - he said while nervously hugging her back but quickly turning away. “I thought no one was home”. “Oh, don’t worry, most people think the same thing. That’s why we never get visitors but I’m already used to it. You see, my parents are always at work and ever since little they have left me here to take care of myself.” “How is that possible? You’re only a kid!” Exclaimed Sambi, confused about her situation. “Oh it’s nothing, I already even know how to cook you see? I know how to take good care of myself!” She said proudly, going on talking about what other many things she could do. ‘What is this kid anyways?’ Sambi thought to himself but quickly snapped out of it turning back to her and cut her short of her babbling. “So…why aren’t you in school like a normal kid?” “Well, I DID go to school before…but…some things happened and well, I’m not going anymore.” “But why not?” “Just because.” This answer perplexed Sambi very much, he didn’t knew why her parents left her here all day and night and why she didn’t go to school like every normal child but he decided as a maturing young man to stop asking such personal questions and talk about something more nicer. “So hey, do you—““HEY! I know how you got in here! You used that key didn’t you?” She cut him short and quickly pointed at the golden key hanging from his neck. “Oh, this? Um…yeah, kind of. How you know?” He asked a bit nervous. “Well, it doesn’t take a genius to know that’s the key you have been using to go into every house of the whole neighborhood and cause trouble, it couldn’t be possible that you would have ALL the keys to ALL the houses of the WHOLE neighborhood. So as I thought, one key had to be the magical one that would be able to do such things and of course, you make it so obvious by hanging it from your neck, haven’t you thought about that?” He was shocked. He couldn’t believe a girl his age was possible of knowing everything he has been doing and none of the adults could. Maybe it had to do that most adults think more in general and would NEVER think of a kid sneaking up on them every day.

“Well yeah, you’re right. So what? Do you have a problem with that?” He angrily asked thinking it could intimate her. “Not a problem, but more of an adventure!” “…Huh?” He was confused, I can’t think of anything more to describe his feelings other than confusedness.  “Yeah you heard me! I know that key can open more than just doors! Let me tell you this, a hidden treasure is hidden deep inside the house of Mrs. Bumbleton and I just KNOW you have been in there a couple of times and just LOVE the smell of cheap perfume but don’t get distracted because there is more than what meets the eye.” – said Angie anxiously wanting to talk about her plan but Sambi was still confused. “Are you serious? But…wait a minute, how do you know I—““ANYWAYS, I know just the plan to get into her house and get that hidden treasure but of course I will need your help and of course, the help of ‘that’ key. Think of it as pirate treasure and we’re the pirates looking for it, whaddya say?” Sambi was without words, but his gut told him to follow his heart and his heart yearned with adventure. What did he had to lose anyways? He was in a new country! So Sambi and Angie quickly plotted a plan and went the next day to Mrs. Bumbleton’s house. Mrs. Bumbleton looked like she already had it with whoever was sneaking around her stuff so she bought guard dogs and even more security cameras, now with lasers! The guard dogs were a breeze, a couple of dog biscuits should do the trick. Angie and Sambi’s luck was on their side, as the lasers weren’t a problem since they were both so little and thin, so they just hopped in between them. Slingshots were a favorite since with just a shot they could take down every security camera they could find.

“This way, hurry up!” Angie exclaimed as she dragged him down some secret stairs. It was very dark and had a lot of spider webs, it really looked like nobody had been there in years. “I smell it.” “Smell what?” “You’ll see.” - Angie said to him. He did smell something more than just the cheap cologne, it was a very sweet smell that quickly overpowered their noses and sent them into bliss. “Oh my god.” “What?” “Look.” Angie said as after some searching between a lot of junk and pointed at something. It was the BIGGEST pile of candy you would ever see! It was even bigger than the whole house upstairs! They were in awe just looking at it but right before they went to touch it Mrs. Bumbleton screamed at the top of hers lungs. “So YOU have been the one who have been trying to steal MY candy!” Sambi quickly thought ‘Only me? What about Angie? Doesn’t she see her?’ “Quick, this way!” Angie said to him as she dragged him once more through the pile of junk. They ran and ran while Mrs. Bumbleton was right behind them. Sambi thought this would be the end as he saw the famous white light at the end of the tunnel but before he knew it, he was outside.

“What….what happened?” “We’re outside, silly.” – said Angie taking a bite of the sweet candy. “Bu-but how did you even get the candy?” He asked still more confused than ever. “Oh, it’s magic” And with a quick snap of her fingers, everything went to white again and Sambi reappeared in his bed on the morning of his moving day to Spain. Everything was a dream, but it was the most vivid dream he had ever experienced. As he was walking to the plane it came to him. It was not just ANY dream and he knew that girl wasn’t just any girl either. “Hm, so that’s how I would be as a girl.”
